What was once thought of as vandalism is now rightfully viewed as creative expression. Decades ago NYC was viewed as the premiere city that showcased graffiti, but times have changed and the genre has evolved,, and the art world recognizes the talent of these artists. Whenever I visit somewhere new, I try to make it a point to, #1 find out if they have street art and #2 try to incorporate a street art tour as part of my visit. I love the creativity of the artists, and I get a good feel for that city's vibe by what's painted on the sides of buildings, bridges, you name it.
Some art makes a political statement , or it could showcase what's currently happening in poop culture. From Curacao, San Juan, Mexico City, NOLA, Houston, Miami, and other cities around the world every destination offers a unique canvas and each artist has a different story to tell.
Thanks to technology you can do a google search for street art in a particular city, or download one of the street art apps where you enter the city you plan to visit and search to find out if that art work you heard about is up to date. If you're on Instagram you can also preplan your hunt by looking up the hashtag #streetart.
